Public transport within Marrakech

There is public transport outside the medina (mainly buses and the occasional horse-drawn caleche) but it’s much easier and more convenient to get around by taxi.

Taxis come in two types: petit and grand. The petit taxi is the main mode of transport for short distances within the city. They are small, light brown cars (often Fiats) that have the word ‘petit’ stencilled onto their roof-racks and will only take a maximum of three passengers. They are inexpensive, with a ride from the Medina to Guéliz, for example, costing around 10Dh. However they’ll fleece you if they can. Many honest ones will simply turn on the meter but some will claim that it’s broken or just ignore you if you ask. Your options are: to fix a price in advance, haggle on arrival, or just decide on what you’re paying and hand it over at the end of the trip - or else get out and find a taxi with a meter.

5-20Dh for trips inside the walls only 50% surcharge after 8pm in winter and 9pm in summer.

Grand taxis are bigger, estate type vehicles and mainly used for large groups or long journeys out of town. They have, by law, to display prices for specified trips. These prices are per trip and not per person, as drivers often claim.
